Why layered
A roller that changes its mind.
A layered shade — you may have seen them called banded or zebra shades — is a single loop of fabric with alternating sheer and opaque horizontal bands. Roll it so the opaque bands line up and you have a solid shade. Roll it a few inches further so they sit between the sheers and you have a striped, softly filtered window.
It gives you a genuine range of light in one product at a sensible price, which is why it has become so popular in newer houses. It is a contemporary look and it does not pretend otherwise — in a 1920s stone colonial it will read as out of period, and we will say so.
Worth knowing
The honest limits.
This is a product that gets oversold, so here is where it falls down.
- Not blackoutEven fully aligned, light comes through the solid bands and around the edges. It is a room-darkening product at best. For a nursery or a shift worker, buy a blackout roller with side channels instead.
- Night-time privacyAligned, the solid bands do give real privacy after dark — better than a solar shade. Offset, they do not. That is a setting rather than a limitation, as long as you know it.
- CassetteWorth adding. The alignment mechanism is more visible than a plain roller's, and a cassette tidies it away.

Are layered shades the same as zebra shades?
Yes — banded, layered, zebra and dual shades all describe the same construction. Manufacturers each use their own name for it. We will show you the actual product rather than argue about what to call it.
Do they work on large windows?
Up to a moderate width. Like any roller, a very wide layered shade will deflect in the middle and the bands will stop aligning cleanly across the full span, which is much more visible on this product than on a plain roller. On wide openings we usually split it into two.
Can they be motorized?
Yes. It is a roller mechanism underneath, so it takes a motor as easily as a plain roller — and getting the alignment exactly right is genuinely easier with a remote than by hand.
