Why shutters
The one treatment that adds to the house.
Almost everything else you can hang on a window is a furnishing — it goes up, it wears out, it gets replaced. Shutters behave more like joinery. They are fixed to the opening, painted or stained to sit with the trim, and they stay with the house when you sell it. That is why they cost more than a shade and why nobody ever regrets the dining room.
The catch is that they are unforgiving of a bad measure. A shade that is a quarter-inch narrow still works; a shutter frame that is a quarter-inch narrow is firewood. Every shutter we sell is built to the opening we measured ourselves, and the same person who measured it is there when it goes in.
Choosing
Hardwood or composite.
There is a right answer per room rather than per house, and it usually comes down to moisture.
- HardwoodBasswood, real grain, takes a stain properly. The choice for living rooms, dining rooms, studies and anywhere the woodwork is part of the point. Lighter than composite, so it hangs better on very large openings.
- CompositeAn engineered core with a hard finish. It will not swell, warp or shed paint, which makes it the right call for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and anything within a few miles of salt water. Reads as painted wood from more than a foot away.
- Louver size2½-inch louvers suit smaller and older windows; 3½-inch gives a cleaner view out and suits larger modern openings. We bring both to hold up against the actual window, because the difference looks bigger in a room than in a photo.
- Inside or outside mountInside keeps your trim visible and is nearly always right where the casing is worth seeing. Outside mount covers a shallow or badly out-of-square opening. We work out which at the measure — it changes the look far more than most people expect.

How much do plantation shutters cost?
More than shades and less than most people fear. Price moves with opening size, louver width, hardwood versus composite and how many openings you are doing at once. We quote per window at the free consultation with current promotions applied, so you leave with a real figure rather than a range.
How long do shutters take to arrive?
Typically three to four weeks, longer than shades because each panel is built to your measurements rather than cut from stock. We give you a realistic date at the quote. If a supplier slips we tell you as soon as we know rather than on the day you expected the install.
Can shutters go on arched or angled windows?
Yes. Arches and angled tops can be built as a fixed shaped panel above operable shutters below. It is genuinely beautiful when the shape is worth celebrating, and honestly not worth the money when the window is high, small and rarely looked at. We will tell you which one you have.
