Sheer shade with horizontal fabric vanes diffusing daylight

Shades · The diffusing one

Sheer shades, light with the edges off

Soft fabric vanes floating between two layers of sheer. Tilt them for light, close them for privacy, raise the whole thing to clear the glass.

Why sheer

A blind and a sheer, doing both jobs.

A sheer shade suspends soft fabric vanes between two layers of sheer fabric. Tilt the vanes open and daylight comes through diffused and even, with the hard shadows taken off it. Tilt them closed and you have privacy without darkness. Raise the whole assembly and the window is clear.

It is the most flattering light in this catalogue, which is why it turns up in living rooms and primary bedrooms far more than in kitchens. It is also more expensive than a cellular shade doing a roughly similar job, and we would rather you knew that before you fell for it in the samples.

Worth knowing

Where it shines and where it doesn't.

Honest limits, since this is the product people most often buy on looks alone.

  • Best inLiving rooms, dining rooms and primary bedrooms — anywhere the quality of the light is part of the experience of the room and the window is a reasonable size.
  • Less good inBathrooms and kitchens, where humidity and grease are hard on an open fabric structure, and in any room that needs genuine blackout. Room-darkening versions exist but a blackout roller or cellular will always beat them.
  • CleaningVacuum gently with a brush attachment. The vanes are soft and can be crushed by enthusiastic handling, so this is not the treatment for a hallway where a dog goes past it four times a day.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How is a sheer shade different from a cellular shade?

A cellular shade is one continuous fabric that goes up and down. A sheer shade has tiltable vanes inside it, so you can change the light without changing how much of the window is covered. You are paying for that extra control and for the quality of the diffused light.

Do sheer shades give real privacy?

With the vanes closed, yes, during the day. At night with lights on, shapes will be visible from outside — the same physics as a solar shade, though less pronounced. In a bedroom facing a street we would pair it with something else or point you elsewhere.

Can sheer shades be motorized?

Yes, and they are one of the better arguments for it, because you are operating two things — the lift and the vane tilt. Doing both from a remote or a schedule is genuinely nicer than doing both by hand. See motorized shades.
