Why roller
The shade that gets out of the way.
A roller has less going on than anything else we sell. No pleats, no slats, no stack of folded fabric sitting across the top of the glass — just a panel that rolls onto a tube barely thicker than a wrist. On a window where the view is the reason you bought the house, that matters more than any amount of fabric texture.
That simplicity is also why they suit rentals and hard-use rooms. There is very little to break, and if one does get damaged you replace that single shade rather than rebalancing a whole room. Add a cassette — a slim housing over the roll — and the mechanism disappears entirely.

- FabricEverything from a soft light-filtering weave to full blackout vinyl. Blackout rollers in a cassette with side channels are the darkest room we can give you, which matters for nurseries and shift workers and almost nobody else.
- Cassette or open rollAn open roll shows the fabric on the tube — honest, cheap, fine in a utility space. A cassette wraps the roll in a slim housing that matches the fabric or the trim, and is what makes a roller look deliberate rather than default.
- MotorizationRollers motorize better than any other shade, because there is so little mass to move. Rechargeable motors mean no wiring in an older house. See motorized shades.

What is the difference between a roller shade and a solar shade?
A solar shade is a roller shade with a screen fabric — an open weave you can see through. Same mechanism, different cloth. If your problem is glare and heat but you want to keep the view, you want a solar shade. If your problem is privacy or darkness, you want a standard roller.
Will a roller shade block light completely?
The fabric will. Light still leaks around the edges of any shade mounted inside the opening, so a true blackout needs side channels, which we can supply. Without them expect a dark room rather than a black one — fine for most bedrooms, not enough for a nursery.
Can rollers work on very wide windows?
Up to a point. Past a certain width the tube starts to deflect in the middle and the fabric tracks unevenly. On very wide openings we will usually recommend splitting it into two shades on one headrail, which looks deliberate and works properly. We will flag it at the measure.
