Motorized & smart shades
For the windows you were never going to reach.
Every house has them — the two-story foyer, the transom over the front door, the run of glass behind the sofa. Motorized shades are not a gadget on those windows. They are the difference between a treatment you use and one you leave down for four years.
Where it earns its money
Three windows where motorization is the only sensible answer.
Tall and two-story glass. A foyer window fifteen feet up has no good manual option. A pole is awkward, a long cord is a hazard, and a ladder is not something anyone does twice. This is the single most common reason people call us about motorization.
Wide or heavy shades. Past a certain width a shade is genuinely hard to lift evenly by hand, and it starts running crooked. A motor pulls it dead straight every time, which also means it wears better.
Whole rooms at once. A living room with five windows is five separate chores morning and evening. On a schedule it becomes nothing at all — the shades drop at sunset and lift with the alarm, and you stop thinking about it.
How it's driven
Battery, plug-in or hardwired.
Which one is right depends mostly on whether the walls are open. In new construction we can do things a finished house simply won't allow.
Low-voltage plug-in power
A slim transformer to a nearby outlet. Removes the recharging altogether where an outlet happens to sit close to the window.
Hardwired & new construction
Power run to the head of the window before the drywall goes up. Nothing to see and nothing to charge, ever. Only realistic while the walls are open — worth planning at the framing stage.
Alexa & Google Assistant
Ties into the smart home you already have, so shades answer by name or by room. Set up on install day, not left as homework in a manual.
Sun & time schedules
Shades that drop at sunset and lift with the morning. Also a genuine energy measure — closing west-facing shades before the afternoon peak keeps a room from ever getting hot in the first place.
Handheld & wall remotes
Grouped by room or by scene, with a wall-mounted remote where a light switch would be. Nobody has to own an app to work a shade in this house.
New construction
The window to plan this is before the drywall.
We outfit new-construction homes across Middletown, Whitehall and the greater MOT area every week, and motorization is the one decision that is genuinely much easier before the house is finished. Power at the head of the window costs very little to run while the walls are open and is disruptive to add afterwards.
If you are building, talk to us at framing rather than at move-in. Even if you motorize only the tall glass and leave the rest manual, having power there means the option stays open later.

Do motorized shades need to be hardwired?
No — most of what we install is battery powered. A rechargeable pack sits in the headrail and gets topped up once or twice a year, with no wiring, no electrician and no patching. Hardwiring is worth it only when the walls are already open, which in practice means new construction or a gut renovation.
How often do the batteries need charging?
Typically once or twice a year, depending on the size of the shade and how often it moves. Larger shades and shades on a sunrise-and-sunset schedule land at the shorter end. The shade warns you before it runs out, and recharging is a matter of plugging in a cable at the headrail.
Do they work with Alexa and Google Home?
Yes, and we set it up on install day rather than leaving it as homework in a manual. Shades answer by name or by room, so you can lower a single window or the whole living room. They also work perfectly well without any of that, on a handheld or wall remote.
Are motorized shades noisy?
The motors we use are whisper-quiet — audible if you're standing beside the window, unremarkable from across the room, and quiet enough for a bedroom on a morning schedule. If you've heard a loud motorized shade, it was almost certainly an older or budget motor.
Is motorization worth it for normal-height windows?
Sometimes. On a window you can comfortably reach it's a convenience rather than a fix, and we'll say so. Where it earns its money on standard windows is in numbers: a living room with five of them stops being a chore twice a day once it's on a schedule.
